BUILDER CUSTOMIZATION GUIDE -- SOUND LOCK ENTRY

CUSTOMIZABLE -- Interior wall finish (paint colour, decorative panels), vestibule flooring surface finish, light fixture brand and style, signage design and placement, door pull/push plate finish.

DO NOT ALTER -- Sound lock vestibule dimensions, door separation distance, door STC ratings (D1 and D4), interlocking door control logic, perimeter seal specifications, wall construction type within the vestibule, ceiling construction above the vestibule, floor isolation continuity through the vestibule. The sound lock geometry is calculated to prevent simultaneous door opening and maintain the STC isolation chain.

Entry Concept Overview

D1 Entry is the only entrance to the MediaVerse studio complex. It is located at the SE corner of the south wall and opens directly into the Editing Area. There is no separate vestibule room — instead, the first ~1.5 m of the Editing room functions as an acoustic transition zone (sound lock).

STC Path Analysis

Sound entering the Editing room from outside must pass through either the door (D1) or the south wall (W4). The weakest link in any assembly governs the effective STC of the composite barrier.

Transmission Path STC Rating Weakness Points Mitigation
Outside → D1 door → Editing STC 50 Threshold gap Perimeter seal wear Auto drop seal Magnetic perimeter seal
Outside → South wall (W4) → Editing STC 50 Door cutout reduces effective mass Continuous sealant Full cavity insulation
Flanking: around door frame STC 45-48 Frame-to-wall junction Sand/lead-filled frame Acoustic caulk full perimeter
Flanking: through threshold / slab STC 55+ Structure-borne vibration Float floor isolation Neoprene gasket at threshold
Composite STC Note

The effective composite STC of the south wall assembly (wall + door) is governed by the weakest element. With both D1 and W4 rated at STC 50, the assembly approaches STC 47–48 in field conditions (typical 2–5 dB field derating). Ensuring seal integrity at all perimeters is critical to achieving designed performance.

Frame Specification (STC 50 class)

Frame
16 ga steel, welded corners, filled with sand/lead sheet
Jamb Depth
140 mm
Threshold
automatic drop seal + neoprene gasket
Seal
magnetic perimeter seal, continuous compression gasket
Hardware
3x ball-bearing hinges, lever handle, surface closer

Exterior-Specific Requirements

1
Weather Stripping
Continuous neoprene compression gasket + brush sweep at bottom. Dual-layer system: exterior weather seal and interior acoustic seal.
2
Rain Deflector
Aluminium lip, 15 mm proud of threshold face. Directs water runoff away from door bottom and drop seal mechanism.
3
Drip Edge
Aluminium drip moulding above door head. Prevents water ingress into frame head joint and top seal.
4
Corrosion-Resistant Hardware
All hinges, closers, and lever sets in stainless steel (316 grade). Prevents degradation from humidity and weather exposure.

ODU Proximity Warning

The outdoor condensing unit is located immediately east of D1 and presents a noise risk when the door is opened.

Outdoor Unit — Adjacent to Entrance

~90 cm east of D1
55–65 dBA at 1m
3.0 TR capacity
Impact

When D1 is open, ODU noise (55–65 dBA) enters the Editing room unattenuated. Even brief openings during recording in adjacent rooms can cause audible contamination in VO Live (NC-20) and Control (NC-25) via internal transmission paths.

Mitigation Measures

  • Keep D1 closed during all recording sessions. Post signage: “Recording in progress — do not open.”
  • Install an acoustic louver screen between the ODU and entrance path (min 1.2m high, perforated panel with rockwool fill, 10–15 dB insertion loss).
  • ODU vibration isolation: rubber anti-vibration mounts on a separate concrete pad (not connected to building slab) to prevent structure-borne noise.
  • Consider a short baffle wall (concrete block, 1.5m high) between ODU and D1 entry path for permanent noise shadow.

D1 Entry Installation Checklist

Sequential steps for D1 installation. Each step must be verified before proceeding. Hold points require sign-off from the acoustic consultant.

  1. Verify rough opening dimensions
90 cm wide + 10 mm tolerance each side = 920 mm rough opening. Check plumb, level, and square.
  2. Install 16 ga steel frame with weather-rated acoustic sealant
Frame jamb depth: 140 mm. Use Tremco Acoustical Sealant at all frame-to-wall contacts. Sand/lead-filled frame sections for mass loading.
  3. Verify plumb and level (±1 mm)
Use precision level on both jambs and head. Maximum diagonal deviation: 2 mm across full frame height. Shim as required — never force frame into distorted opening.
  4. Install exterior drip edge and rain deflector
Aluminium drip moulding at frame head. Rain deflector lip at threshold, 15 mm proud. Seal all fixings with weatherproof silicone.
  5. Hang door leaf — verify 3 mm perimeter gap
Door weight: 70 kg. Requires 3 stainless steel ball-bearing hinges. Verify uniform 3 mm gap on all three edges (both jambs and head). Adjust hinge positions if needed.
  6. Install automatic drop seal mechanism
Mount drop seal in bottom of door leaf. Test deployment: seal must contact threshold plate with uniform pressure across full width. Verify smooth retraction when door opens.
  7. Install weather stripping (exterior) AND acoustic seal (interior)
Two separate systems: exterior continuous neoprene weather stripping protects against rain/wind. Interior magnetic compression gasket provides acoustic seal. Both must be continuous, no gaps at corners.
  8. Light test from both sides (no gaps visible)
In darkened conditions, shine bright light from one side. Inspect from opposite side. No light leaks at jambs, head, threshold, or corners. Any visible light = acoustic leak. Adjust seals until zero light transmission.
  9. Water spray test (no water ingress at threshold)
Spray exterior face with hose at moderate pressure for 5 minutes. Inspect interior for any moisture at threshold, jamb bases, and rain deflector junction. Verify drainage slope is carrying water away from threshold.
  10. STC field test (must meet STC 50)
Perform ASTM E336 field STC test across complete door assembly. Minimum acceptable: STC 50. If field STC is below target, check seal integrity, threshold contact, and frame-to-wall junction sealant.
